This includes retinal, oculoplastic, ocular motility, neuro-ophthalmology, uveitis, glaucoma, orbital, and corneal problems, with daily emergency and sub-speciality clinics.

If you have an eye problem, please see your General Practitioner or optometrist, or for emergencies involving the eye, please go to your nearest Emergency Department.

Information for referring practitioners

Urgent Ophthalmology Outpatient Referrals

For urgent outpatient appointment referrals or advice, referring practitioners can:

  • During working hours (Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm), please phone the Ophthalmology Clinic 9224 2167 or fax urgent referrals to 9224 3045.
  • Out of hours, please telephone 9224 2244 and ask to page the on-call Ophthalmology Registrar.

Routine outpatient referrals

With for a high demand for new, non-urgent Eye Clinic appointments at RPH, the Department of Ophthalmology requests that GPs consider directing patients to see an optometrist (if they haven’t already). Where referral to RPH is still required, please include a copy of the optometrist’s report with the referral.

Key points which optometrists can provide to help with triage are:

  1. visual acuity
  2. intra-ocular pressure
  3. pertinent anterior segment, retinal and optic nerve features
  4. visual field test if relevant
  5. ophthalmic history.

Patients may be referred for routine assessment to the Outpatient Clinic via standard outpatient referral forms (external link) and with the optometrist report attached including the information above to:

Central Referral Service (external link)
GPO Box 3462
Midland WA, 6056

Or fax to 1300 365 056.

RPH Eye Clinic utilises outside services for the provision of some routine screening such as diabetic retinopathy (REACH program). This may involve patients being seen outside of RPH for testing including retinal photography with specialist review of results and recall of patients to the clinic for review of abnormal findings.
