Hospital in the Home

Hospital in The Home (HITH) care is the provision of care to hospital-admitted patients in their place of residence as a substitute for hospital accommodation.

The RPH HITH program was the first of its kind in Western Australia, substantially expanding since its inception in 1994.

Our Hospital in The Home service provides acute nursing care and support for patients in their homes. This service may be provided for the whole or only part of the patient’s admission.

Hospital in The Home care is a virtual ward in the hospital system and is coordinated and delivered by clinical nurses. When acute care is no longer required, patients will be referred to another service.

During HITH care, the patient is still an admitted patient and the care is a substitute for inpatient care, decreasing the length of the patients hospital stay.

Treatments offered by HITH include:

  • IVABs / medication
  • anticoagulation
  • wound and drain care
  • stomal and ileostomy support
  • negative pressure dressings
  • post-orthopaedic and breast surgery care
  • blood pressure monitoring
  • post-surgical care.
