Internal Medicine
The Department of Internal Medicine at Royal Perth Hospital has many areas of interest that include metabolic medicine, gastroenterology, stroke medicine, emergency medicine, obstetric medicine, clinical pharmacology, mood disorders and diabetes.
In April 2005 the department underwent major structural and operational changes. The re-structure has been achieved by recruiting new consultant staff with sub-specialty interests, and a general philosophical commitment to improve and maintain the services provided by the department.
Clinical services are provided by a team of Consultant Physicians who work in Long Stay Medical Units, the Short Stay Medical Unit and the Medical Outpatient Clinics.
Registrars will rotate through all service units and RMOs will reside exclusively in the Short Stay Medical Unit.
Besides general medicine, Internal Medicine consultants have specialty interests in cardiovascular medicine, metabolic medicine, gastroenterology, stroke medicine, emergency medicine, obstetric medicine, clinical pharmacology, mood disorders, diabetes and medical education.
Some consultants are also formally attached to specialty departments in the hospital.
The department is also comprised of three full time academic staff from the UWA’s School of Medicine and Pharmacology.
Two consultants within the department are also linked to clinical services at Swan District Hospital.
Besides clinical service, the department is also involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical and dental students and postgraduate training for the FRACP.
The department also undertakes several clinical research projects and audits. The School of Medicine and Pharmacology component of the department also undertakes further research.
